Biologist Turned Pro Bike Racer, Emily Kachorek

Biologist turned pro bike racer Emily Kachorek migrated from the thick of the South American Rain Forrest to the wilds of professional cyclocross racing. As much as it sounds like a leap, it all makes sense when you get to know Emily. She’s as intelligent and resourceful as she is creative and kind — but she also has no problem dismantling folks on the race course. All traits that put her squarely in the category of people I respect and admire. Here’s a look behind the scenes of a project we worked on together for Bicycling Magazine.

The Content of Character

Most folks have plenty of friends, but there are only so many people you bring to work.

For me, that cat is the maniac/brainiac/winner-of-the-game Brandon C. Manning. This year’s PRIDE celebration was the perfect example why. I was assigned the simple task of doing everything all at once. After a flurry of txt msgs, me and homeboy were locked in. Then the people showed up. In waves of thousands. At one point, Brandon was casually hoarding all our camera gear in the heart of chaos while I was parked five miles across the water. Uber ultimately rescued the princess. And we ended the day with a body of work that would make even the grumpiest dude smile — and the affirmation that people really are what matter most.
